Typical Half Day

9AM-1PM

Our day begins in the seminar room with a discussion of Lincoln’s leadership strategies. We examine the development of his anti-slavery stance and how he brought national attention to his platform. By looking at the cabinet members and others Lincoln surrounded himself we explore strategies for coalition-building, influence, and leveraging diversity. Finally, the legal course of the Lincoln administration against slavery offers a compelling case study into how leaders can move change forward even in the face of opposition.

Following the morning discussion, participants are immersed in a conversational and inquiry-based tour of the Cottage itself. They gain insight into Lincoln’s experience living here and how this place shaped his decision-making.

After a short break, we resume leadership conversations in our Lincoln’s Toughest Decisions exercise. In this multi-faceted and award-winning program, each participant receives a set of primary sources related to a specific person with a stake in the decision on emancipation. Facilitated by museum educators, participants discuss among themselves the tough leadership questions Lincoln grappled with here at the Cottage.

Finally, we return to the seminar room and reflect upon what insights today’s leaders can take from Abraham Lincoln and the road to emancipation.

Typical Full Day

9:30AM-4:30PM

The extended version of this program includes the morning seminar work, Cottage tour, and Lincoln’s Toughest Decisions as described above, and adds sessions designed to explore resilience and communication skills for leaders. It also provides participants extended time to use this place – as Lincoln used it – for deep reflection, through an exploration of the landscape surrounding the Cottage and facilitated conversation on specific questions of your choice. These proven models of resilience and reflective practice offer support coaching ourselves and others through adversity.
