Building a Legacy: Meet Candice Shy Hooper
Candice Shy Hooper, longtime President Lincoln’s Cottage donor, shares why she chose to support the site with a bequest.
Candy joined her legacy with Lincoln’s by adding simple bequest language to her will:
“I, [name], of [city, state, ZIP], give, devise and bequeath to President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home, located in Washington, District of Columbia, [a percentage of the estate or description of property or written amount]. In the event that President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home no longer operates the site, this gift shall be directed to the organization responsible for the operation, maintenance and preservation of President Lincoln’s Cottage, for the sole benefit of President Lincoln’s Cottage.”
With that simple phrasing – shorter than the Gettysburg address – Candy helped ensure a sustainable future for President Lincoln’s Cottage. You too can be a part of Lincoln’s enduring legacy by remembering “the Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation” in your will.
