Planned Giving

As a private nonprofit, President Lincoln’s Cottage depends on private support. You can help ensure this powerful place is here for generations to come by leaving a bequest in your will. Build your legacy, make a difference, and promote brave ideas for years to come.

With simple phrasing – shorter than the Gettysburg address – you can help ensure a sustainable future for President Lincoln’s Cottage and be a part of Lincoln’s enduring legacy by remembering “the Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation” in your will.

Building a Legacy: Meet Candice Shy Hooper

Candice Shy Hooper, longtime President Lincoln’s Cottage donor, shares why she chose to support the site with a bequest.

To leave a legacy in support of President Lincoln’s Cottage please add the simple bequest language to your will:

“I, [name], of [city, state, ZIP], give, devise and bequeath to President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home, located in Washington, District of Columbia, [a percentage of the estate or description of property or written amount]. In the event that President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home no longer operates the site, this gift shall be directed to the organization responsible for the operation, maintenance, and preservation of President Lincoln’s Cottage, for the sole benefit of President Lincoln’s Cottage.”
