Teacher in Residence at President Lincoln's Cottage

Anywhere Temporary

Update: Remote and in-person candidates will be considered.

President Lincoln’s Cottage seeks an experienced K-12 educator (with specific experience in grades K-8) to serve as a Teacher-in-Residence for a special, term-limited project to run from approximately June 15-August 30, 2022 (dates flexible). The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Programming staff at President Lincoln’s Cottage and partners at Game Genius, an organization that provides play-based services to make social impact fun, to develop an education program for elementary or middle school aged students. The program will introduce students to civic learning and the roles and responsibilities they have to take their bold ideas about our democracy and turn them into action.

At President Lincoln’s Cottage, Abraham Lincoln made some of his most nation-changing decisions that have helped define the American experience for generations. These ideas on race, ethnicity, and immigration demonstrate that democracy needs constant work and active participation in civil society to create a “more perfect Union” – practices best developed at an early age. Interested candidates should be certified to teach social studies
and/or civics. To apply, please submit a resume and letter of interest highlighting classroom experience relevant, but not limited to: teaching civics, social and emotional learning, social justice, and/or content related to Abraham Lincoln, civil rights, and/or the Civil War.

Please send applications to Callie Hawkins, Director of Programming at by June 12, 2022. Additionally, President Lincoln’s Cottage requests a work sample demonstrating a high degree of creativity and efficacy in actively engaging students through interactivity, using games, play, or other active methods.

Thanks to a generous donation from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Marder-Vaughn Center, President Lincoln’s Cottage will provide a stipend not to exceed $15,000, paid out incrementally after successful completion of specific project milestones agreed upon by President Lincoln’s Cottage and the chosen candidate.

While the title for this position is Teacher in Residence, the majority of the work on this project may be performed remotely. Fully remote candidates will also be considered.
