Washington, D.C. — Swamp Dogg, the eccentric octogenarian musician with a devoted cult following, is having a moment with an award-winning album, Blackgrass, his first foray into Bluegrass, and a new documentary, Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted.
That moment is coming to DC on the weekend of May 17-18.
Swamp Dogg is headlining Bourbon & Bluegrass (May 17 & 18), the “party for preservation” at President Lincoln’s Cottage, with two performances featuring songs from Blackgrass as well as other hits from his storied career. He will be leading an impressive line-up that includes Hubby Jenkins, Dori Freeman, Martha Spencer, and Goldbug Revival.
“Swamp Dogg is such a unique voice in the history of American music, sardonic and playful, projecting joy and melancholy in harmony. We can’t wait to hear him at this unique festival,” said Callie Hawkins, CEO & Executive Director at President Lincoln’s Cottage.
The festival coincides with the DC premier of the award-winning documentary Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted. Screenings will be held at the Miracle Theatre on Capitol Hill (May 17) followed by a Q&A with Swamp Dogg and his bandmate Moog Star, and one at the Silver AFI Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring (May 18).
“As The Miracle celebrates nine years of bringing back movies and music to Barracks Row, we are delighted for the opportunity to host Swamp Dogg and Moog Star for this special screening event in conjunction with the Bourbon and Bluegrass Festival,” said Juliet Main, Director of the Miracle Theatre.
The Director of programming at AFI echoed the sentiments, “Swamp Dogg is an unsung national treasure and SWAMP DOGG GETS HIS POOL PAINTED captures not only his incredible career in music, but also his irrepressible and infectious personality. Needless to say, we jumped at the chance to showcase this joyful documentary tribute here at AFI Silver the same weekend Swamp Dogg is performing right here in DC!”
Swamp Dogg tells it like it is, playfully targets social ills, and adds a dose of humor and generosity to all that he does. The District needs some Swamp right now.
