After long days at the Executive Mansion, President Lincoln commuted back to the Soldiers’ Home where his family waited to greet him. Abraham, Mary, and their young son Tad used the Cottage as a place of sanctuary from the chaos of civil war Washington. Coming home to the Cottage allowed Lincoln to be both a person and a president, both a devoted father and a determined leader.
Today, President Lincoln’s Cottage invokes this spirit of homecoming as a home for brave ideas, fostering Lincoln’s legacy of freedom in his beloved summer residence. This ornament portrays a tired father engulfed in a warm embrace with his son, Tad Lincoln. The horse, the Cottage’s front door, and the evening sky represent that daily back and forth to work for the 16th President. Homecoming conveys that no matter what stresses Lincoln faced during the war, he had a place to come home to and a family waiting there to embrace him with their love.
