October 2009: Spiritualism and Mary Lincoln's Seance at the Cottage

Explore Civil War era spiritualism through the story of Mary Lincoln's private séance at the Cottage. Curator Erin Carlson Mast will illuminate the roots and rise of the spiritualist movement in America, and the development of Mary's involvement in the movement. Learn about the mediums who worked with Mary Lincoln and walk through the events of a seance Mary Lincoln held at the Cottage, as recounted by Noah Brooks.

June 2009: The Lincoln's Move to the Cottage

President Lincoln's Cottage Curator, Erin Carlson Mast, will share historic accounts of the Lincoln's move to the Soldiers' Home each summer and talk about the kinds of furnishings they brought with them. She will also share new research on paint finishes in the Cottage, details of our ongoing furnishings plan and our plans for the Mary Lincoln Room, and lead the group into the attic and other spaces that are not part of the regular tour.
